LOCK TABLE statement

Hi, all
Is the following sentence true ?
* LOCK TABLE statement don't allows read access to locked tables by
the other users.
If another user try to SELECT a locked table, he must attend
until the locked table is released.
I have heard about another syntax of LOCK TABLE that allows read access
to locked tables, on v6.3.2.
Is it true or I've dream ?
