Easier to use warm standby in 8.4?

So, the release notes for 8.4 had "Easier to use Warm Standby" in them. What changes were made that make it easier to use?

There were also some performance improvements in the recovery path in
8.4, like having the background writer active during recovery, that
should help on I/O bound slaves.
