Did you crank up maintenance_work_mem beforehand?

My settings (only relevant) on my desktop ( 8Gb RAM, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6750 @ 2.66GHz

maintenance_work_mem = 256MB #16MB # min 1MB
effective_cache_size = 1GB #128MB
