Everyone using libpq and bytea is probably having to invent this wheel..

You mean one already appeared since 10 Dec?! (There was a
PQescapeBytea, but not the reverse)

PQescapeBytea, but not the reverse)

Your patch has been added to the PostgreSQL unapplied patches list at:
