Uh, why are we not just replacing the old script and allowing git to
preserve the old version?

Yeah, I was wondering that too. There seems no very good reason to use
HEAD as a historical repository when we have an SCM that does a very
fine job of archiving old versions.

The idea was to be able to run the old version now and then, especially before
releasing, to make sure we haven't lost anything with the new script.
