Hi!

In the output below (seen with PostgreSQL 8.1.3 and 8.2.1),
is it intentional that "char" is quoted, or is it a bug?

Welcome to psql 8.1.3, the PostgreSQL interactive terminal.

Type: \copyright for distribution terms
\h for help with SQL commands
\? for help with psql commands
\g or terminate with semicolon to execute query
\q to quit

exp=> select distinct data_type from information_schema.columns;

It's intentional --- that type is not the same as CHAR(n).
