BUG #8496: psqlODBC driver does not work well via Excel

The following bug has been logged on the website:

Bug reference: 8496
Logged by: Mani
Email address: manindra.sarkar@brightnorth.co.uk
PostgreSQL version: 9.2.0
Operating system: MacOS 10.8 ML
Description:

I have tried using the psqlODBC driver with Excel but it does not work as
expected.

In comparison the below driver from Openlink does a good job.

http://uda.openlinksw.com/odbc-postgres-st/

It would be great to have the same functionality in the native driver.

Excel does not seem to respond with any data - but does give an idea that it
has made some sort of a connection with the database. SQL commands fail from
being executed.

It is strange - I used pg ODBC driver together with MS Excel without any
issue.

Re: BUG #8496: psqlODBC driver does not work well via Excel

Hi guys,

I have enlisted the issues on this page:
http://support.openlinksw.com/support/techupdate.vsp?c=20736

When we use the psqlODBC driver via any ODBC administrator, and use Excel's
data options to connect to the PostgreSQL database, we get the below
response from Excel.
1) An empty table window
2) Running SQL queries gives the below response

[image: Inline images 1]I don't get this when using the commercial product
or even when trying to connect from an external demo program.

Cheers,
mani

Just to provide some additional information, I'm using MS Excel 2011
running on the Mac running Mountain Lion 10.8.

If the commercial version works fine with the same administrator and Excel,
and by only switching the postgres driver, it is highly likely its the
driver on the Mac.

Cheers,
mani

Re: BUG #8496: psqlODBC driver does not work well via Excel

My question was about the Mac version which isn't functioning fully.

If anyone else has any experience would be great, can we pass these
messages to the bugs mailing list - my messages are bouncing because I'm
not a member yet.

I\m happy to share any technical details which would help mend the driver -
so everyone can benefit its full functionality close to the commercial
version.

Cheers,
mani
