checking connecton

Hi All!
Help me please postgres guru!
How can I check from libpq C client program whether connection to pgsql
engine is still work or already lost?
PQstatus() returns CONNECTION_OK even if backend process is killed
after PQsetdb().
ps: Searching through pgsql-mail-lists archive and Faq give nothing.
