I'm reasonably sure (although have not tried myself) you can access
Active Directory via LDAP. In the past (a few years ago), I've used
available Tcl libraries for LDAP and PostgreSQL to do something similar.

I am not sure what scripting language you are programming the intranet
in but this example should able to do something with JAVA if not you
could build the object in vb or C++ and make it soapy.
